Beat the Bishop

Our bishop here sets himself a goal to read the Book of Mormon each year. He has extended a challenge to the Primary kids to try and beat him to the end. If they get the Book of Mormon read then they get a giant sized candy bar for beating the Bishop. We asked the boys (since they are all in primary now) if they would like to beat the Bishop. They are so excited to read the scriptures--the candy is a big incentive. We are finally able to read whole chapters at a time with them and multiple chapters on some days. Last night, the kids read with us for half an hour! Not only that, but when Tim gave them a couple of quiz questions at the end they really got into a good gospel discussion.
Just so you can get the whole picture--Wyatt is not always excited about reading. He says in a whiny voice "I don't want to beat the Bishop tonight" (usually it is because he wants to play Wii). We tell him that it is fine but thwen he won't get the big candy bar. He says "I don't want a big candy bar...err...I want to beat the Bishop" and then he runs over and gets his scriptures.

That's a cute idea! Kelly and I were talking last night about how our family scripture study is *extra* crazy!! I swear the kids are quiet and well behaved until it's time to start scriptures, then all you-know-what breaks loose! We've decided we've just got to keep one keepin'on while they're young and hopefully it will get a little more civilized when they're older:)

That is such a fun idea for the primary kids! Maybe you could scan & print out giant candy bar wrappers and laminate them into bookmarks or stick them into the front cover of your scriptures as a constant motivation.

What a great idea for the Primary kiddos. We have committed to read the BOM this year, from cover to cover, as a family and it IS a constant stuggle but well worth it. I can't believe the discussions we have through the amazing questions Ben asks. It's a good thing :)
