Attitude Problem

Zach has an attitude problem. He doesn't like school. It isn't because he has a mean teacher or mean kids in his class. It isn't riding the bus or eating school lunch. Zach says school is too easy. Before school started he was really excited. He said that he hoped that the first grade work was hard enough that he would get some things wrong every once in a while. "I got everything right in Kindergarten and the only thing I learned was how to tell time on the round clock". (his words) So far this year he says it is all Kindergarten work. For his first discovery journal entry he wrote..."I don't like learning letters. You need to upgrade my work. And I mean it!" He then drew a picture of his face with a word bubble that said "hmmm" and a paper with some addition and multiplication problems and answers. I thought for sure that I would need to email his teacher and explain his personality but it seems like she handled it wonderfully. Zach made a comment yesterday that they had to go through the letters for the other kids in the class. I asked him if knowing that makes it easier to deal with the "easy work". He said it did--he also said that his teacher gave him some math and told him to read the directions and go as fast as he wanted. He seemed pretty excited about that too. So, now I can breathe a little easier. I was hoping that since his teacher has 10 kids of her own that she would recognize his individual needs and know how to respond. Sounds like she knew just what to do!! Here's hoping the good attitude continues.

He He...that's funny! I'm sure his attitude is not nearly as bad as some of the kiddos his teacher has in her classroom. It seems pretty minor to me :)

I have a couple of those kids who want harder work all the time - the teacher sounds like she caught a clue and found something that will work for now - Eventually it does get harder, but Chad (a freshman in ALL honor classes) is wondering when:) He has resigned himself to the fact that college will probably get hard!

As good as our education system is, it does seem to be lacking something for the kids on both extremes of the bell curve. Poor Zach! It does sound like his teacher is trying to respond to his needs, though.

Kickin' Kids offers a flag football season. Ethan and Zach both wanted to participate. We were able to get them on the same team and had...
