Darcy is a week shy of 14 months old and I can't feed her anything. I am glad that it isn't because of allergies. I have a niece and two nephews with allergies and I say 'no thank you' to the idea of my kids having food allergies.
But, she refuses to eat anything with any kind of texture. No table food. Give her a piece of bread and she eats a bite or two, breaks up the rest of the bread and throws it on the ground. Sometimes, I even find the bites that I thought she ate under her when I get her out of the high chair. I bought some stage 3 baby food (says it is for ages 8 months+) and she won't eat it. Spits it right back out. She gags too. She won't touch cheerios, or mashed potatoes. She will eat a couple of Fruit Loops before the 'throw it on the ground' game begins. She does eat bananas-- most of the time. I just don't know what to try next. I keep thinking that if I keep introducing things that eventually she will start swallowing. We had a week where she was eating 1/4 of a piece of bread at a time or 1/2 a graham cracker, or vanilla wafers. But, she is right back to eating a couple of bites and then throwing the rest. Of course, give her a chocolate chip cookie and it disappears. Too bad she can't live on those. (Too bad we all can't live on chocolate chip cookies. YUM.)
She will eat baby food. Stage 1 or 2.
I talked to the doctor about it at her 1 year appointment. He said that he hesitated sending us to an occupational therapist because they would just gradually introduce new foods. So, we have been trying that ourselves without much progress.
Any ideas? Her next doctors appointment is at the end of April and I want to have tried everything I can think of before then.

Zach swallowed an Advil today. I know it doesn't sound too exciting but we have some pill swallowing-averse children. This is a big day!...

That's tough. What if you took your meals and just pureed them in the blender to get her used to at least the flavors? Then you could gradually puree them less and less and increase some the chunkiness level until hopefully she gets used to it? Jillise has texture issues still to this day. She wants to like fruits and veggies, but too many of them trigger her gag reflex. Oh, well! Good luck!
Sounds like one stubborn girl! You know she can do it (by evidence of the cookie) Kasey gagged a ton too, even to the point of making himself ill. We finally cut his milk a ton by suggestion of our doctor (he was on like 60-70 ounces a day). Once he got hungry enough he started eating (we never gave him more than 2-3 ounces at a meal or snack unless he ate first). It was a long couple of days though, but he was much happier after it. I hope she starts eating for you soon. I do like Paiges idea though.
All my kids gagged on stage 3 baby foods so I couldn't do the gradual approach. I found it best to start out with hard foods, like those gerber biscut crackers to get them used to holding and gnawing on food. Then we went for things like spaghetti, stove-top stuffing, dried cereals like Kix and Cheereos. My kids had to feed themselves, though, or they would gag. Also, you have to cut back on the milk because it will fill her belly and she won't want to eat real food. When my babies would sit on my lap while I was eating they always wanted to eat whatever I was eating. So one bite went in my mouth, another into the baby's. I doubt there's an OT problem if she'll eat cookies. My 4-year-old is still picky and cries at the dinner table every night. I make her eat the same thing we're eating and she sheds tears with each bite. Isn't it fun?
What a challenge. I sent you an email. Hopefully it's not too much! I just went off about it. It's been a struggle for me with both my boys. Jacie is a "dream" to feed. It's been awesome. Oh, I once heard that a kid can survive on 1/2 peanut butter sandwich once a week. I wonder if the point of that is oh well if they don't eat much, they'll survive. Hmm. Take it for what it's worth. :o) Miss seeing you!
