Casting #1

Feb 8, 2010

We met with Dr. Stephanie Holmes today to start Darcy's club feet correction. She came it to talk to about the process and was surprised by how educated I was on what was going to happen. That surprised me a little--who wouldn't educate themselves as much as possible about a birth defect? I guess if you don't catch it on an ultrasound you might not have the time. But, we were lucky to know beforehand and prepare ourselves. Here is the before: Getting the first cast on: All done: It was really a quick and easy process. Two things surprised me. It was messy....really messy. I had put Darcy in a little dress because I thought that would simplify things but we had to take it off to keep it from getting plaster all over it. She also needed a new diaper after getting the casts. The second surprising thing was that she slept through the whole thing. I am sure that won't happen every time but Dr. Holmes said it allowed her to get a really good stretch on the feet. The casts take 48 hours to dry completely and will weigh 9 ounces when dry. But, throw on a pair of tights and you can't even tell. She doesn't seems too bothered by them. (She was just hungry in this picture.) The doctor said that they get so used to having something on their legs that when they remove the casts the babies will be hypersensitive to touch on their legs. Next set of casts will be on Friday!

What a crazy, amazing, wonderful thing is modern medicine! It will be really interesting to watch this process unfold on your blog. She looks so sweet and I'm glad the first casting went well!

How cool. I love your posts. What a blessing that she slept through the whole thing. :o).

I just want to snuggle that sweet baby. I can hardly wait for you guys to move "closer". We will practically be neighbors after the last couple of years. We will definitely plan more visits.
